Downton Abbey film update
Tea Time Tidbit for the week of January 14, 2019
It’s over eight months away, but the first teaser trailer for the Downton Abbey film, due to be released here in the U.S. September 20th, has already dropped!
To say the trailer doesn’t give much away is an understatement. But at least we get to travel down that familiar path again and see the ringing of the bells beneath stairs. The trailer also provides us with a cast list (just press pause and you’ll see all of the principal cast from the sixth season are in the film!) and the promise of an “official trailer coming soon.”
While shooting the film only took a few weeks, having started in early September, rumors about the making of a film began long before the acclaimed series ended. As Executive producer Gareth Neame put it, “it was a way to sweeten the pill for the millions of fans around the world.”
The film is set in the fall of 1927; about a year and a half following the conclusion of series six, which if you recall was New Year’s Eve 1926. All we know so far about the plot is that something happens that brings everyone together. What that something is hasn’t been revealed.
Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley)
What has been said though is that reportedly Mary and Henry are still happily married and according to an interview Michelle Dockery who plays Lady Mary gave recently, “what you see is her for once being settled.” Lady Edith and her husband Bertie Pelham meanwhile have been challenged by their new roles in the British aristocracy – Edith I’m sure certainly never imagined being a Marchioness! It’s also reported that the "mysterious event" calls for an “all hands on deck” approach and as such Mr. Carson is lured back out of retirement.
Allen Leech (Tom Branson)
As for Tom Branson, Allen Leech, the actor who played him, recently suggested that the film may see his character finally finding love. Which is exactly what it looks like Leech has found, having recently tied the knot with American actress Jessica Blair Herman. The wedding took place at an exclusive estate in Santa Barbara and was attended by their good Downton Abbey friends Michelle Dockery, and Dan Stevens, who played Matthew Crawley.
No doubt, as its premier date draws near, more bits and pieces about the Downton Abbey film will be released. As soon as we hear more, you can be sure we’ll give you an update.
