Related Actors, part two

Tea Time Tidbit for the week of January 29, 2018

Tea Time Tidbit

Dame Diana Rigg and daughter
Rachael Stirling in Doctor Who

A couple of months ago we took a look at some of the actors we’ve seen over the years on MPT, who are related. Here are a few more – courtesy of Afternoon Tea viewer Julie Klavens.

Tony Doyle, who starred in Ballykissangel as businessman Brian Quigley until the actor’s sudden death around this time of year in 2000, was the father of another Ballykissangel cast member, Susannah Doyle. She appeared in all eight episodes of the sixth and last series, playing horse-trainer Avril Burke.

Rachael Stirling in The Bletchley Circle

Long before actress Dame Diana Rigg, was cast as the Duchess of Buccleuch in Season 2 of Victoria on Masterpiece, her daughter, Rachael Stirling also played a Duchess; the Duchess of Sutherland, in the 2009 film The Young Victoria. Stirling also starred in the quirky comedy The Detectorists, where she played Andy’s girlfriend, then wife, Becky. Rigg played Veronica, Becky’s mother in the series.

The two actresses also worked together in 2000 in what was Stirling’s second television appearance; the two part biblical mini-series In the Beginning. Stirling played Young Rebeccah and Rigg was the same character only older. The pair teamed up again in 2012 in a Doctor Who episode called "The Crimson Horror".

Stirling has also appeared in several other shows that have aired on MPT, including Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Agatha Christie’s MIss Marple, Inspector Lewis, Churchill’s Secret, where she played Sarah Churchill and The Bletchley Circle, where she starred as Millie, one of the series four main characters.

Another Detectorists actress is Sophie Thompson, who played Sheila. She is the younger sister of Emma Thompson. Their mother is Phyllida Law, who has been in a variety of series we’ve aired on MPT, including New Tricks, Midsomer Murders, Foyle’s War, and Doc Martin to name just a few. Law also starred alongside her Academy Award winning daughter Emma, in several films and made frequent appearances in Thompson’s 1988 variety series, Thompson, which also happened to star Thompson’s husband at the time, Kenneth Branagh (Wallander).

The younger Thompson sister, who appeared in the first episode of Thompson, has also been in several of the same British television imports as her mother - Doc Martin, Midsomer Murders, New Tricks – although they were not the same episodes in which her mother appeared. They did, however, play mother and daughter, Mrs. and Miss Bates in the film Emma.

I’ll have more related actors another time. In the meantime, if there are any particular actors you’d like to hear more about drop me a line!
