Cast of Home Fires

Roll on Sunday night, April 2nd! Not only will Call the Midwife be on at 8pm that night, but it’ll be followed at 9pm by season two of a series I love just as much – Home Fires.

If you missed season one of Home Fires, it’s a serial drama centering round the lives of members of a Women’s Institute in rural England during the Second World War. It features a terrific cast of women – many whom I sure you’ll recognize, including Samantha Bond, who was Lady Rosamund Painswick in Downton Abbey, Francesca Annis who was in Cranford, and Clare Calbraith who was also in Downton Abbey (she played the widowed maid Jane Moorsum, the one who had a bit of a fling with Lord Grantham!).

Calbraith was actually born in the area in which Home Fires was filmed, Cheshire, which is located in the north west of England. The series’ fictional village of Great Paxford in reality is a small village called Bunbury, which was bombed by German aircraft in 1940.

The slightly larger, neighboring village called Tarporley was also used as a location in the series, as was the county’s main town, Chester. All three places were reportedly chosen because they still resembled towns as they were in the 1940s – minus the cars, of course!

While they may have done away with the cars and the street signs, the Home Fires producers did keep the local Bunbury butcher’s shop and some of the pubs intact. They also didn’t dare – or need to - touch the village church, St. Boniface, which dates back to the 14th century, as well as the village’s Old Vicarage.
