Tea Time Tidbit

Diana King | Diana Lambert

On Tuesday, May 21 you can see episode one in the 9th season of Are You Being Served? This particular episode, "The Sweet Smell of Success,"" originally aired in the U.K. in 1983 and in it we once again meet Mrs. Peacock, played by Diana King. This was King’s third and final appearance in the role of spouse to the good Captain.

King started her career in 1939 in a television film called Little Ladyship. In it, she played a schoolgirl, but was 21 at the time. From then on she worked non-stop, notching up a total of 126 television and film credits, until the year of her death in 1986.

The last television series King appeared in was Inside Story, about a fictional newspaper company, starring Roy Marsden and Francesca Annis. The episode in which King starred aired just two days before she died of cancer at the age of 68.

Diana Lambert

In 1985, the year that Are You Being Served? ended its 13-year-long run, King was replaced in her role as Mrs. Peacock by an actress with whom she shared the same first name, Diana Lambert. Lambert had first appeared in Are You Being Served? eleven years earlier, when she played the customer who buys the simulated fox in the episode called "Fifty Years On" (about Mrs. Slocombe’s supposedly fiftieth birthday). She played Mrs. Peacock in two episodes before the series concluded on April 1st, 1985. Lambert died in 1995 at the age of 63.

Are You Being Served? airs on Afternoon Tea at 3:30pm Monday through Friday.
