Mum's Lesley Manville

Tea Time Tidbit for the week of July 30, 2018

How do you like the new series Mum which recently began airing on MPT Fridays at 4:30pm?

Lesley Manville as Cathy
and Peter Mullan as Michael

Playing the title role in Mum is Lesley Manville, who in real-life has a son the same age as her character, Cathy, does. Manville’s son Alfie was born when Manville was 32 and married to her first husband, Academy Award winner, Gary Oldham. The couple, who met when they were both appearing at the Royal Court Theatre in London’s West End, split up when Alfie was three months old.

By the time of Alfie’s birth, Manville had already established a name for herself as a television and stage actress, and was starting to make films. Her first was Dance with a Stranger in 1985. She eventually left the stage for an entire decade, in order to concentrate on film work, largely appearing in films directed by Mike Leigh. Their collaboration began in 1985, and since then Manville has been in a total of 11 films directed by Leigh.

This year, Manville was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her appearance in The Phantom Thread, where she played the sister of Daniel Day Lewis’ character. That was just one of the acting honors Manville has received over the years. Manville did not, however, set out to become an actor. When she was young she wanted to be an Opera Singer and trained as a soprano at the age of 8.

After being introduced to acting when she was in high school and after doing some minor roles on television, Manville decided at the age of 15 to dedicate herself to being an actress. She enrolled at a The Italia Conte School of Speech and Drama, a school known for its television and screen acting program. It was there though where she also learned the art of improvisation. A skill that came in very useful later on when working with Leigh, as the actors in his films are given the basic plot line then told to improvise.
