Happy Valley's James Norton
Tea Time Tidbit for the week of August 27, 2018
Sarah Lancashire in Happy Valley
Fans of James Norton, who plays Grantchester’s Anglican vicar Sidney Chambers, can see the Yorkshire actor in a far different role this week, when the crime drama Happy Valley comes to MPT.
Set in the north of England, Happy Valley, stars Lark Rise to Candleford’s Sarah Lancashire as a down to earth, recently divorced, police sergeant, who blames her teenage daughter’s suicide on an ex-con. That’s the character played by Norton, and it’s really quite a chilling performance. The series also stars, Siobhan Finneran, who played the lady’s maid Sarah O’Brien in the first three series of Downton Abbey.
Tom Brittney, Robson Green and
This summer Norton has been busy working on season 4 of Grantchester, which will be the last time we’ll get to see him as the crime-fighting vicar. Joining Grantchester is a new vicar, the Reverend Will Davenport, played by Tom Brittney, who will be the new foil to Robson Green’s Geordie Keating.
When asked how he felt about leaving the show, Norton said, “As excited as I am to be filming a new series of Grantchester, it’s also heartbreaking to be saying goodbye to Sidney Chambers. I’ve loved this experience, and particularly working with such an extraordinary cast and crew. All the best to the fantastic Tom Brittney in his role as the new vicar. He is a wonderful addition to the Grantchester family.”
Meanwhile, we can expect to see Norton on the big screen late next year, when he stars in a new film adaptation of Little Women. Filming begins in Boston this fall. No word yet on what role he’ll play.
Happy Valley airs Friday, August 31st at 8pm on MPT.
