The Durrells in Corfu and Poldark

Tea Time Tidbit for the week of September 23, 2019

Be sure to tune into MPT on Sunday, September 29 for the final seasons of two popular Masterpiece series.

The Durrells in Corfu

First up at 8pm is The Durrells in Corfu. This fourth series will be taking us right up to 1939 and the outbreak of World War II. If you’re new to the series, it started in 1935 when widow Louisa Durrell decides to move her family from England to the island of Corfu. In reality, the eldest Durrell child, Lawrence, was already living in Corfu with his wife, when his mother with younger siblings in tow, followed suit.

The Durrells in Corfu is followed at 9pm by the first episode of season five of Poldark. It’s a wonder Aidan Turner, who plays Ross Poldark, has made it this far, given the accidents that have transpired over the years.

In series three, for instance, Turner fractured his hand when, during a scene involving muskets, the cock of another actor’s rifle caught his little finger, pulling right back until it flopped around like jello.

Then, there was the instance when filming was taking place in the wild Cornish sea in the middle of winter. As they filmed Ross lifting Demelza out of a boat, a huge wave picked up the boat and it slammed into Turner’s head. The actor promptly dropped his co-star, Eleanor Tomlinson, into the water, which Turner confessed in an interview with the Radio Times magazine, was “not very Ross Poldark”. Fortunately, Turner didn’t suffer a concussion, unlike one of the underwater cameramen.

“These waves, you wouldn't think there's anything to them,” said Turner, but once you get out there you're at the mercy of Mother Nature and she doesn't care how well the previous season rated."

So, some great Sunday evening viewing on MPT as we move into fall and we hope you’ll be joining us.
