To The Manor Born's Penelope Keith

Tea Time Tidbit for the week of September 26, 2016

Tea Time Tidbit

Penelope Keith

This week I wanted to give you a heads-up about the terrific line-up of programs we’ve got coming up Sunday, October 2nd. First off there’s all three back-to-back episodes of The Politician's Husband. Then, of course, we're off to Cornwall for episode three of Poldark Season 2, which is followed by Indian Summers at 10pm. At 11pm we have The Queen's Garden; a lovely documentary filmed over all four seasons in Buckingham Palace Gardens.

The Penelope Keith Rose

Earlier this year, actress Penelope Keith commemorated Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday with a televised tribute, whereby she visited Her Majesty’s official residences in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Keith must have been in her element being able to check out the gardens of the homes as she reportedly “loves nothing more than donning her garden gloves when she gets some downtime.”

Unlike the character Margo she played in Good Neighbors, who was never seen without her rubber gloves, Keith apparently likes to get her hands “very, very dirty”. Her love of gardening, in fact, is such that she once described herself as a “gardener who acts” and in 1984 she even had a rose named after her.

To The Manor Born, with Peter Bowles

For almost 40 years Keith has lived in the village of Milford, in the county of Surrey, where in 2002 she became only the third woman in over 1,000 years to serve as the county’s High Sheriff. Following the one-year position, Keith helped launch the UK Forces Gulf Fund, set up to support British forces serving in Iraq. She is also a very active patron of the UK’s National Memorial Arboretum, a place of remembrance that honors the fallen. Her involvement in various other charitable organizations, such as the Actor’s Benevolent Fund and the prison organization Keep Out, were recognized a couple of years ago when she was named in the Queen’s 2014 New Year’s Honours List.

I’ll have more on “Dame Penelope” in the coming weeks, along with her To The Manor Born co-star, Peter Bowles. In the meantime, mark your calendars for Friday, October 7th when the series returns to Afternoon Tea.
