LOTSW's Juliette Kaplan: 1939-2019
Tea Time Tidbit for the week of October 14, 2019
Juliette Kaplan sporting her
A few weeks ago I reported on the sad news that Juliette Kaplan, who played Pearl Sibshaw in Last of the Summer Wine, was gravely ill in hospice. Her agent Barry Langford took to Twitter on October 2nd to say that “against all odds Kaplan reached her 80th birthday today!” His post was accompanied by a photograph of Kaplan sporting an 80th birthday button. Her fans were effusive in their congratulations.
Sadly, on October 10, Langford announced that “Our Pearl” has finally succumbed to the cancer she has bravely battled for so long.” He went on to thank everyone “who sent their love and support to this fearless and supremely gift actress.”
Howard and Pearl
Kaplan was born in the southern seaside resort town of Bournemouth, but after living in South Africa and New York, her mother decided her daughter’s British accent needed a little refining and sent her to elocution lessons at drama school. It was the start of Kaplan’s acting career, which in later years included the television drama series EastEnders and Coronation Street.
Of all her roles, Kaplan was especially proud of the fact that she helped create the distinct look for the role of Pearl, who in reality looked nothing like Kaplan. It was even Kaplan’s idea to have her character wear a turban or a beret to anchor the wig she wore as Pearl. “It used to flap in the back,” said Kaplan, “so every time the wind blew, my wig came off!”
Kaplan married in 1958 and had three children before her husband died in 1981, when Kaplan was just 42.
Last of the Summer Wine airs weekday afternoons at 1:30pm on Afternoon Tea.
