The Durrells in Corfu's Daisy Waterstone

Tea Time Tidbit for the week of November 4, 2019

The Durrells in Corfu may have concluded, but there’s more Durrells ahead on Sunday, November 10 with a special Masterpiece presentation - What The Durrells Did Next. It’s a series you won’t want to miss, as you’ll learn the true story about one of the nicest, albeit a little eccentric, families on television. Keeley Hawes, who plays Louisa Durrell in the series, hosts the show.

Daisy Waterstone as Margo

The Durrells of Corfu is based on author Gerald Durrell’s book My Family And Other Animals. Daisy Waterstone, who played Margo in the series, is a huge book lover, which isn’t surprising, given that her father is the founder of the famous U.K. chain bookstore Waterstones. Waterstone’s mother is a film producer and as a child the young actress got to visit the set where the Harry Potter films were being filmed, and it was seeing how the films were made that inspired Waterstone to go into acting.

Waterstone was not long turned 20 when she was cast in The Durrells and the extent of her filming experience was limited to just one or two days. With the help of Keeley Hawes, who played her on screen mom and who Waterstone says treated her as if she “was a professional already,” she grew in confidence and settled “into being an actor.”

As well as missing Keeley now that the series has concluded, Waterstone especially misses her “extra brothers.” She already has three real-life brothers, but they are all much older than the actors who play her on-screen siblings, so she enjoyed being able to get up to mischief with “brothers” her own age.

Having to play the role of a real life person felt like a huge responsibility for Waterstone, and you can find out more about real-life Margo in the Masterpiece special presentation of What The Durrells Did Next, Sunday, November 10th at 8pm.
