Call the Midwife Christmas Special

In case you missed last week's announcement, Afternoon Tea was on a short holiday in order to raise much needed funds for the British programs you get to see weekday afternoons. Thank you for your patience and if you made a pledge of support on behalf of all Afternoon Tea viewers, many thanks.

Well, the holiday season is upon us and this Friday, December 8 at 2pm you can see part one of the My Family 2007 Christmas Special, "Ho, Ho, No!" Part two airs on Monday, December 11th. Starting in January, My Family will be replaced in the Afternoon Tea line up by Waiting for God, starring Stephanie Cole as the formidable Diana and Graham Crowden as her fellow retirement home resident, Tom.

On set of Call the Midwife

On December 25th, it's time for the annual Call the Midwife Christmas Special. This year's special is a far cry from last year's, when the midwives - and Fred the handyman - travelled to South Africa. Remember how hot it was? Well, this year the midwives are heading into the winter of 1962, or as it was nicknamed back then, the "Big Freeze".

Fred, played by Chris Parisi and
Reggie played by Daniel Laurie.

It was one of the coldest winters in U.K. history. It started in December and it wasn't until March 6th that the Brits woke up to a frost-free morning. No doubt we'll learn more about that period in time next year when Call the Midwife returns with season 7. In the meantime, be sure to mark your calendars and set your recording devices for the Christmas Special which will air Christmas Day at 9pm.

Members of the Turner family (minus baby
Freddie) celebrate the final scene of Season 7.

The Call the Midwife production crew wrap up the filming of each series with a nice tradition. They let the actors who appear in the very last scene of the series pose with the clapboard. As you can see from the picture, this year it was the Turner family's turn and the Turner's middle child, Angela, was allowed to do the honors. (Apparently baby Freddie couldn't be in the photograph because he was eating).

As soon as filming wrapped up on Season 7, Laura Main, who plays Shelaigh Turner, started rehearsing for her role as Princess Fiona in a new UK tour of the hit musical Shrek! which opens in Edinburgh at Christmas.
