Actors' Fundraiser at The Ivy
Tea Time Tidbit for the week of December 17, 2018
Penelope Wilton and Jim Carter
The Ivy is one of london’s most prestigious eating establishments. It’s located in the theatre district and is especially popular with celebrities. On Sunday, December 2nd, the place was packed with a host of well-known British actors, many of whom are familiar to MPT viewers. They weren’t there to be waited on though, instead they had donned their aprons and were doing the serving...and the bartending and the coat checking and the hosting duties. It was all in aid of Acting for Others, a charitable organization that supports theatre workers.
The Ivy restaurant
For One Night Only at The Ivy 2018 featured a one-sitting only three-course dinner, with drinks, after which there was a live auction. Playing the role of auctioneer for the evening was Jim Carter, who we know better as Mr. Carson in Downton Abbey. Items up for bid this year included a pre-show dinner with Sir Derek Jacobi and Samantha Bond (Lady Rosamund Painswick in Downton Abbey) and tickets to the upcoming sure-to-be-sold-out West End play All About Eve, which stars another Downton actress, Lily James, who played Rosamund’s niece Rose in the series. (In All About Eve, James will play Eve, to Gillian Anderson’s Margo).
The auction item that went for the highest amount this year was the chance to watch ballet from the wings at the Royal Opera House. That particular prize raised £11,000 (about $15,000) and the total amount raised for the event was £110,000 ($150,000).
Dame Judi Dench, Sir Derek Jacobi, Dame Maggie Smith, Samantha Bond
As well as being an auction prize, Samantha Bond also ‘worked’ the event, as did Dame Penelope Wilton (Isobel Crawley in Downton), Celia Imrie (After You’ve Gone), Robert Lindsay (My Family), Laura Carmichael (Call the Midwife), Owen Teale (Ballykissangel) along with a host of other stars of stage and screen. Sir Derek and Dame Maggie Smith hosted the Dame and Knights table with Sir Ian McKellen and Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax) as their guests. What a line up!
And talking of line-ups – be sure to tune in on Sunday, December 23rd for a great evening’s viewing. It starts at 7pm with Dr. Blake Mysteries, which is followed at 8pm by a brand new travel series called Vintage Roads Great & Small, with All Creatures Great and Small actors Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison in the driving seats. Then at 9pm we’ll have back to back episodes of Victoria, Season 2 on Masterpiece and at 11pm you can end your day with Last of the Summer Wine.
Finally, on behalf of all our viewers, we want to wish Dame Judi Dench, who turned 84 on December 9th, a belated Happy Birthday!
