Call the Midwife Holiday Special

Tea Time Tidbit for the week of December 23, 2019

The Holiday Season is upon us and that means a host of festive programs, including the much loved and highly anticipated Call the Midwife Holiday Special, which airs on Christmas Day at 9pm. That’s just a few hours after it will have aired in the U.K.

Call the Midwife Holiday Special

In this year’s special the midwives find themselves in the wild and wonderful Scottish Hebrides. The actors all do such a great job in the series, it’s hard to believe that they have so few formal rehearsals owing to the quick paced filming schedule. Apparently most of the scenes are only rehearsed right before they are filmed. This tight schedule can make it particularly tough on the actors, when the midwives have to perform a song, which they always do in the Christmas Special episodes.

Fortunately, the midwives all seem to have been blessed with wonderful voices - as you’ll see for yourself in the special. If you are recording the episode, please remember it’s an hour and a half in length and ends at 10:30pm. And do mark your calendars for Sunday, March 29th, when the 9th season of Call the Midwife comes to PBS.

Actresses Laura Main, Leonie Elliott, Jennifer Kirby and Helen George
rehearse a Christmas carol during a break in filming.

Also, note that following the Call the Midwife Holiday Special we’ll be airing a special episode of the comedy series Vicious, starring Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi. That’s at 10:30pm.

Although we have a number of holiday programs coming up during the evening hours, it’s still business as usual Monday through Friday afternoons on MPT, when you’re invited to join us from 1:30pm through 4pm for Afternoon Tea. Fans of Are You Being Served? should be sure to tune in on Friday, December 27th when we’ll be airing the pilot episode of the series. That’s at 2pm. Be sure to tune in.
